What is FOC and why should you care?

If you’ve been hanging around the shop or following our socials for a while, you’ve probably seen us toss around the acronym "FOC" (usually followed by a date).

If you’re new to collecting, or just enjoy grabbing a coffee and browsing the shelves without worrying about the industry logistics, you might be wondering: What on earth is an FOC, and why do we keep on banging on about it?

Consider this your official Comics Games and Coffee guide to the most important deadline in comics.

What is FOC?

FOC stands for Final Order Cutoff.

In simple terms, it is the "point of no return" for us as a retailer. It is the very last day we can tell the publishers (like Marvel, DC, Image, etc.) exactly how many copies of a specific comic we need.

Once the FOC date passes, the publishers lock in their print runs. They print exactly what was ordered, and rarely much more.

Why does it exist?

In the old days, shops had to guess what you might want months in advance. If we guessed wrong, we either had disappointed customers (sold out!) or boxes of unsold books taking up space that could be used for more board games or gaming tables.

FOC exists to bridge that gap. It happens roughly 3–4 weeks before a book hits our shelves. By this point, cover art has been revealed, plot details have leaked, and the "buzz" is building. FOC allows us to adjust our numbers one last time to match that excitement.

Why should YOU care? (The Benefits)

You might think, "I'll just grab it off the shelf on New Comic Book Day." And for big titles like Batman or Amazing Spider-Man, that usually works.

But here is why ordering before FOC is a game-changer for your collection:

• Guaranteed Copies: If a book suddenly gets hot (maybe a new character appears, or a major death happens), it will sell out on release day. If you order before FOC, your copy is locked in. No fighting the crowds, no paying triple the price on eBay the next day.

• Variant Covers: You know those stunning B var covers, 1:25 ratios, or special artist spotlights? We don't order every single variant for the shelf because it’s too risky. If you want a specific cover, FOC is the time to tell us so we can order it specifically for you.

• Helping the Little Guys: For indie comics (Image, Boom!, Dark Horse, etc.), pre-orders at FOC are life-and-death. If a book doesn't get enough pre-orders, we might only stock one or two copies for the shelf. Pre-ordering ensures you get to read those hidden gems.

How it helps US (Your Local Shop)

We love being your local hub for comics, games, and caffeine. But comic books are a tricky business—they are non-returnable. If we order 50 copies of a book and only sell 10, that’s money we can’t spend on upgrading our gaming library, restocking Magic: The Gathering boosters, or keeping the coffee machine humming.

When you let us know what you want by FOC, it helps us:

2. Stay Healthy: It keeps our cash flow moving so we can keep bringing in cool new stock.
