New Comics Day 9th January 2019 - Higher, further, faster, more (comics)

New Comics Day 9th January 2019 - Higher, further, faster, more (comics)

This week sees the latest book from the pen of the inexhaustible Kelly Thompson (seriously, does she ever sleep? She’s writing about 8 titles at the moment - all of which are great!), in the form of Captain Marvel #1.

Anyone who has seen the trailer for the new movie, or a certain post-credits scene, will know that Carol Danvers is going to be at the forefront of the new charge of Marvel cinematic heroes, so this is a great time to jump onto a new book and find out what all the fuss is about.

There is also another spider-man book in the neighbourhood with Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man #1 - Is he the worst (bad guys ruining your house) or best (low rents) neighbour?

Also new to the shelves this week is Young Justice #1 from the one off DC-wunderkind BM Bendis, with stunning interior art from Patrick Gleason and a raft of beautiful covers to choose from. Adding some new faces to the classic lineup, this is a wonderful new dawn for the teenager superheroes.
If you want your indie itch tickled, what better than Brubaker and Phillips diving back into the gutters with Criminal #1 - These guys always hit the ground running and this acrs as a perfect entry point to the gritty noir they do so well. Also why not try jumping on to one of the fantastic new series that started recently, such as Bitter Root (monster hunting during the Harlem Renaissance from David Walker, Chuck Brown, Sanford Greene), Blackbird (supernatural gorgeousness from Sam Humphries, Jen Bartel), Die (puntastic D&D-gone-wrong from Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans) or new series Grumble (criminal accidentally turned into pug tries to help half-demon daughter from Rafer Roberts, Mike Norton, Marissa Louise)?
Whatever it is that you are looking for, there is sure to be an indie publisher that can help, so why not ask in store for a recommendation or three?
Favour art over story? Like the animated heaven that is Studio Ghibli? Want to drool over  some magical Miyazaki mastery? (Note: please don’t drool on the books, it makes the staff cry) Look no further than The Art of Howls Moving Castle, which features concept sketches, artwork from the film and the story behind how and why a Japanese animator adapted on a science fiction novel from British stalwart Dianna Wynne Jones.

As ever let us know what needs to magically appear in your pull list!

See you all in the shop soon & have a great week and a very happy new year!
