New Comics Day 10th July 2019 - Vox Popular

The big new release this week (in particular for the RPG community at the store) is the international roleplay YouTube sensations Critical Role offering up Critical Role: Vox Machina: Origins (Jody Houser, Olivia Samson) - Join familiar faces from Critical Role's smash-hit first campaign as their escapades in Stilben lead them toward new adventure-and a dire threat to Grog when he goes missing in the night. 

Since we have started in indie world let's continue there - Bitter Root: Red Summer #1 (David Walker, Chuck Brown,Chris Brunner, Lisa K. Weber, Daniel Lish, Khary Randolph, Dietrich Smith) gives fans of the Sangere family six new short stories set in their world. Then there is grim fantasy Reaver #1 (Justin Jordan, Rebekah Isaacs, Alex Guimaraes) and controversial new series Second Coming #1 (Mark Russell, Richard Pace), which sees a man take in Jesus as his roomate. We also have Belle: Oath of Thorns #1 (Dave Franchini, Igor Vitorino), Ghosted In LA #1 (Sina Grace, Siobhan Keenan), Lola XOXO #1 (Siya Oum) is back from it's third volume, and Strangelands #1 (Magdalene Visaggio, Darcie Little Badger (A) Vanesa R. Del Rey) asks what happens if you have to stay with someone to stop the world ending - even if you hate them? 

There is a new series from the pen of top horror writer Cullen Bunn, when a mysterious flesh-warping disease emerges from a cave system to strike down a small town in Unearth #1 (Cullen Bunn, Kyle Strahm, Baldemar Rivas). There is also a new story in comic form set in the universe of popular game Watch Dogs #1 (Simon Kansara, Horne).

Shredding guitar this week is Murder Falcon (Daniel Warren Johnson), a surprisingly heartfelt story of saving the world from demonic hell beasts. Fan favourites Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips are back this week with another installment in their Criminal universe with Bad Weekend, a hardcover graphic novel building on the original serialisation.

There is also the first volume of the Eisner-nominated Grass Kings (Matt Kindt, Tyler Jenkins), as well as Invincible vol 1 (Robert Kirkman, Bill Crabtree, Cory Walker). The Magicians: Alice's Story OGN (Lev Grossman, Lilah Sturges, Pius Bak) also hits the shelves this week, as does the first volume of journalist Spider Jerusalem's story in Transmetropolitan (Warren Ellis, Rodney Ramos, Keith Aiken, Jerome K. Moore, Kim DeMulder, Ray Kryssing, Dick Giordano, Darick Robertson)  Plus Kitchen Table Magazine returns after several years absence to give you comics, recipes and more.

The indies are crashing into DCs sandbox this week with Black Hammer / Justice League #1 (Jeff Lemire, Michael Walsh), while Batman Universe #1 (Brian Michael Bendis, Nick Derington) is the start of a six part series showcasing some of the Dark Knights greatest friends and foes, while Hal Jordan returns with the first trade of his new series in Green Lantern: Intergalactic Lawman (Grant Morrison, Liam Sharp). There is also Swamp Thing: Roots of Terror deluxe edition (Tom King, Len Wein, Brian Azzarello, Tim Seeley, Mark Russell, Jason Fabok, Kelley Jones, Kyle Hotz, Frazer Irving, Jonathan Glapion, Greg Capullo), and The Trails of Shazam: The Complete Series (Judd Winick, Mauro Cascioli, Howard Porter)

The original creative team are back with Giant Sized X-Statix #1 (Peter Milligan, Michael Allred) Peter Parker is swinging into action with Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man vol 1 (Tom Taylor, Juan Cabal, Marcelo Ferreira, Yildiray Cinar), while Sue Storm breaks away from the Fantastic Four for her first ever solo mini-series, with Invisible Woman #1, and there are reprints of some classic tales of America's favourite hero in Marvel Tales: Captain America (Stan Lee, Roger Stern, Mark Gruenwald, Jack Kirby, John Romita Sr). The War may have ended, but Marvel can still publish new event books, with War of the Realms: Omega (Jason Aaron, Al Ewing, Juan Ferreyra, Carlos Alberto Fernandez, Oscar Bazaldua) showing some of our favourite heroes picking up the pieces.

Logan has two new books out this week, with Wolverine and Captain America: Weapon Plus (Ethan Sacks, Diogenes Neves) showing the connection between the two super soldiers, and Wolverine Vs Blade #1 (Marc Guggenheim, Dave Wilkins) pitting the two Marvel favourites against each other. There is also Secret Warps: Weapon Hex Annual #1 (Al Ewing, Tim Seeley, Carlos Villa, Bob Quinn), and Spider-Man / Deadpool vol 9 (Robbie Thompson, Matt Horak, Jim Towe) gives us the Infinite House of Civil yet Secret Crisis War Invasions that will shake the foundations of the Marvel Universe... In a different universe, this one far, far away, there is Star Wars: Age of Resistance: Captain Phasma #1 (Tom Taylor, Leonard Kirk)

There are books a plenty for younger fans this week, including Care Bears #1 (Matthew Erman, Nadia Shammas, Agnes Garbowska), the I Am He Man (Frank Berrios (A) Shane Clester) and I Am She-Ra (Frank Berrios, Shane Clester) Little Golden Books, along with one for the Minions (Rachel Chlebowski, Alan Batson) and Star Trek: Too Many Tribbles (Frank Berrios, Ethen Beavers)
